How to Store Your Coffee for Maximum Freshness

If you’re passionate about good coffee, storing your beans the right way can make all the difference. Whether you’re sipping on our Organic Espresso or Decaf Mycotoxin-Free, how you store your coffee directly impacts how it tastes in your cup. Follow these simple coffee storage tips to keep your beans tasting fresh for longer.

Why Storing Coffee Properly Matters

While coffee doesn’t expire like milk does, it doesn’t stay the same forever. Once roasted, coffee gradually loses its flavour and aroma.

At Byron Bay Coffee Company, we roast our beans fresh 4-5 times a week to lock in flavour – so it makes sense to store them properly once they reach your kitchen!

How to Store Coffee Beans for Freshness

1. Use an airtight container

Exposure to air is one of the biggest causes of stale coffee. Once you open your bag of freshly roasted coffee, close it tightly using the reseal strip in the bag, or better yet, transfer the beans to an airtight container. This helps protect the delicate oils and aromas from oxidising.

2. Store in a cool, dry place
The best spot for your beans? A cool, dark place such as your pantry. It’s ideal to keep your coffee away from heat, sunlight and moisture, as all of these elements speed up the ageing process of coffee.

3. Avoid plastic
If possible, choose glass or stainless steel containers instead of plastic, which can retain odours and affect flavour over time. Especially if the plastic containers have been used to store other foods.

4. Fridge or freezer? The answer is only if airtight!
In hot or humid climates, you can store your beans in the fridge or freezer, but only in a completely airtight container, making sure there’s no way the pack will get punctured while in there. Coffee is hygroscopic, which means it easily absorbs moisture and smells. This is why storing it in a sealed container is key. Storing your beans in your freezer is best if you’ll be consuming them in the long-term or not brewing daily.
